Privacy policy
Last updated: 21 October 2026
This policy explains how information is handled when you use the OpenRune website, Rune Maker and Chrome extension.
OpenRune is operated by OSIO Ltd (company number 17463838). OSIO Ltd is the data controller responsible for the personal information handled in operating OpenRune. OpenRune was created by Leon Orien.
For privacy questions or requests, email support@openrune.co.
The Chrome extension
The extension examines text on supported web pages and in supported text boxes to recognise runes and display their shapes. This processing happens in your browser.
The extension does not send the contents of those pages or text boxes to OpenRune. It does not send us your browsing history, maintain a browsing-history database, or use the text it processes for advertising, profiling or AI training.
Runes recognised while displaying a page are held temporarily in memory while that page is open. This is separate from the runes you deliberately save in the extension.
Saved runes and Chrome sync
The extension saves your chosen runes and its on/off setting using Chrome’s extension sync storage.
Depending on your Chrome settings, Google may synchronise this information between browsers signed into your Google account. Saved runes can include their design and any name or domain encoded within them. This information is handled through Chrome’s storage and sync services; it is not uploaded to an OpenRune account or database.
The extension also stores your browser’s light or dark appearance locally so its toolbar icon remains visible. A background appearance watcher supports this function.
Rune Maker and the website
Rune Maker saves information in your browser so you can return to your work. This includes saved designs, the current drawing, editor settings, an internal copied-selection buffer and rune export options.
The website also remembers your theme preference and can display runes you have recently copied from Rune Maker on the same website.
These features use your browser’s local storage. OpenRune does not upload these saved designs or preferences to an OpenRune server. There is no OpenRune account or automatic cloud backup for Rune Maker.
Clipboard access
OpenRune writes a rune or exported SVG to your clipboard when you use a copy control. The extension can also recognise runes in text you deliberately paste into its “Add a rune” box.
OpenRune does not continuously monitor your clipboard.
Information inside shared runes
A rune carries the information needed to draw its shape. It may also contain a name and domain you choose to include.
That information travels with the rune when you copy, paste or share it. Some of it is encoded using invisible text characters. Invisible does not mean private or encrypted: someone using a compatible decoder can read it.
Do not include confidential information in a rune’s name or domain. When you share a rune through another service, that service’s own privacy practices apply to the text you share.
Website hosting
The website is hosted by Replit. When you visit, your browser connects to hosting infrastructure that processes technical information needed to deliver and protect the website, such as your IP address and the resources you request.
OpenRune’s application does not maintain a visitor access-log database. Replit may retain infrastructure or security records under its own policies. Those records are separate from the designs and settings saved in your browser.
Analytics and advertising
OpenRune does not include advertising trackers or application analytics in its website or extension. We do not sell personal information or use the text processed by the extension for targeted advertising.
Functional browser storage is used to remember your work and preferences as described above.
Contacting us
If you email support@openrune.co, we receive your email address, your message and any information or attachments you choose to provide.
Messages sent to support@openrune.co are forwarded by our email forwarding service to a Gmail inbox used to handle OpenRune enquiries. The forwarding service and Google process email information to deliver and store these messages.
We use this information to answer your enquiry, resolve problems and handle privacy requests. Please avoid sending passwords or other information that is not needed for your enquiry.
We retain correspondence only for as long as needed to handle the matter, keep a necessary record of its resolution, or meet applicable legal obligations.
Service providers
Website hosting and email delivery involve service providers processing the information needed to perform those functions. These providers may operate infrastructure in different countries.
Their handling of information is separate from the extension’s local processing and Chrome’s sync service. You can contact us for information about the providers and processing arrangements relevant to your enquiry.
We may also disclose information where required by law.
Our reasons for processing information
Where we handle personal information to operate and protect the website or answer enquiries, we rely on our legitimate interests in providing a secure, working service and responding to people who contact us.
Where processing is necessary to comply with a legal obligation, we rely on that obligation.
Your choices and deleting information
You can remove saved runes using the remove controls in the extension popup and switch rendering off using its on/off control.
You can delete Rune Maker’s locally saved information by clearing site data for openrune.co in your browser. This removes saved designs and preferences from that browser profile, so export anything you want to keep first.
Information saved through Chrome sync is subject to Chrome’s sync settings and data controls. Removing the extension should not be treated as a guarantee that every synchronised copy has been deleted.
Clearing local information does not remove runes you have already shared through other services.
Your privacy rights
Depending on the circumstances, you may have rights to access, correct or erase personal information we hold about you, restrict its use, or receive a portable copy where that right applies.
Right to object: you can object to processing based on our legitimate interests.
To make a request, email support@openrune.co. We may need enough information to identify the relevant correspondence and verify your request. We cannot retrieve designs stored only in your browser.
You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at https://ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint/.

We will update this page when our practices change and show the latest update date at the top.
